Copita Cup for Force Majeure - 2021

This copita cup was created for Force Majeure, a specialist liquor store and bar in Århus, Denmark. The store also features a selection of drink-related accessories, such as this little cup used for sampling mezcal and tequila.

In 2018, Mads Schack, the founder of Force Majeure, visited Matalán, a town in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. It is here they produce 90% of the world’s mezcal, a liquor distilled from the agave plant.

Mads was given a little cup - a copita - made of clay, which he carried in his back pocket to the mezcal producers so he could sample the mezcal they stored in large glass bottles, plastic containers and sometimes soda bottles.

Upon returning to Denmark, Mads contacted Sigrid Hovmand at her studio on the island of Samsø. They started to talk and exchange ideas for the design of the cup and the logo stamped on the bottom.

These little cups are still used in Mexico today. They are made locally from clay and are much more affordable than glass.

This assignment is ideal for a small clay studio. When throwing by hand, one can be flexible and work in small numbers.

And now Force Majeure can serve mezcal and tequila in this little custom-made cup.
